Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has declared victory in Michigan’s US Senate race, defeating Republican Mike Rogers to win the seat being vacated by retiring Senator Gary Peters. His victory would make him the first Muslim elected to the US Senate and the first Democratic doctor to serve in the chamber since 1969. The 42-year-old physician campaigned on universal healthcare, lowering medical costs, addressing economic pressures and taking money out of politics.
