Halloween may be known today for costumes, trick-or-treating and spooky celebrations, but its roots go back centuries to an ancient Gaelic festival called Samhain. Celebrated by Celtic communities, Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It was also believed to be a time when the boundary between the living and the dead grew thinner.
