A new DRDO-funded study has warned that the collapse of a hanging glacier above Badrinath in Uttarakhand could trigger a massive ice avalanche. In a worst-case scenario, nearly 398 buildings, 2.66 km of roads and two bridges could be damaged. Simulations suggest avalanche speeds could reach 78.5 metres per second. While the Badrinath shrine is not expected to face a direct impact, debris could still affect the area.
